Fuel Claim

I started employment at a new job a couple of months ago and have been told that I may be able to claim back fuel expenses from my previous job from HMRC.

I have googled and it appears I need to complete the P87 form and send it off, will HMRC contact my previous employer to clarify the mileage or do I just send them receipts etc?

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere but i've never really looked into this kind of thing before, thanks in advance

You need to first confirm that it business mileage and not travel to and from work. If it was miles wholly for business in your own car, did your employer reimburse you any mileage rate?
You don't need receipts...you are claiming tax relief on the difference between the HMRC rate and what you were already paid

    eg 5,000 business miles
    HMRC rate 45p per mile = £2,250
    employer paid 20p (example) = £1,000

tax relief due on £1,250 (the difference)
if 20% taxpayer then you would get £250 back

I basically had to travel from my workplace to various clients addresses just to pick up paperwork etc. My employer never used to pay me any fuel allowance.
Its only around 800 miles that i'm looking to claim back. I am a 20% tax payer. Thanks for your reply

Meant to add I was concerned that if they have to contact my old employer it will never get sorted, took him 2 years to sort out my employment contract!!
