Claiming back overpaid council tax

in Cutting tax
Hello,
I've recently discovered that I've been paying more council tax than required. Apparently I was supposed to be paying 70% of the normal amount due to living alone.
I live in Scotland, and in 2009 was sharing a flat. My flatmate moved out and I have been living on my own. I have a copy of the lease that had both our names on it, and a copy of each lease after this point which only has my details on it.
Can I claim back?

A single person discount would give you 25% discount, any other discount (assuming your not entitled to a double disregard or exemption) would have to be claimed via council tax benefit.
There's no limit in council tax legislation on discount backdating as long as the council can be satisfied that a discount applies.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
I failed to realise that I could claim a Pensioners' discount from my council tax.
When I did submit my claim, they backdated it for the two years that I had not claimed.
That was unexpected, but very welcome.0 -
