This is a complete shot in the dark cos I think I know the answer.

My son is backpacking in Thailand and took his 3 phone for emergencies. He needed to contact us recently and kept ringing us over 2 days only to get the answer machine, at which point he hung up. I have just received his bill. There are 40 calls, all for 1 or seconds duration itemized, at £1.80 EACH!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't suppose 3 will consider a part refund, will they??

I doubt it. The charges are well documented.
Although roaming charges are about the biggest ripoff on the planet IMO...
    The cost of a voicecall.........!

And this is not just 3. All operators do this.

I guess you've got little to loose in trying, I'd go for a polite unknowing approach. A hard line and you'll probably just get told where you stand ie liable.

    No chance.
Increase waiting time of the answering machine before it takes a call.
Next time you son goes abroad advice him using special simcard as, for example, from Oneroam (mobile must be unlocked).

Thanks to you both. I'll try a grovelling letter about poor student etc...

I think this is the only area mobile operators are currently making money and trying to get back money from three is like blood from a stone, even if they owe you it - but no try no chance so good luck
