Work Issued PPE

in Cutting tax
my work supplied me with unbranded PPE last year to work on a new building they had been putting up. I dont need this equipment on a normal day to day basis as I am office based, it is basically only used when working on their building site. They are now telling me that they are going to inform HMRC regarding the unbranded PPE equipment that they supplied me with as this is a taxable benefit so my tax code will change and I will have to pay more because of it? is this the case and what can I do about it?
Thanks

Strictly speaking, your employer is correct, see.......
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye/exb/a-z/c/clothing.htm#x1
But, if you need this gear to carry out any of your work, then I would not have expected this to be termed a benefit, your employer should be obtaining a dispensation.
This PPE would be, as far as I can make out, only a benefit in the year they gave you it, not an ongoing benefit.
My OH was required to wear overalls/helmet/boots etc when out on a work site, this was provided or the cost re-imbursed. None of it ever appeared on his P11D.
I think you need to discuss this with your employer, suggest they should have a dispensation in place.
Quite how being given say a helmet to use when required under H&S rules on a building site can be termed a benefit is beyond my understanding.
Perhaps someone else can clarify this point?0
