Victorian Floor Tiles Help!

I have discovered that I still have the original floor tiles in my hall (house built 1880) and most are in excellent condition. However a handfull need replacing so I was wondering how I would go about looking for replacements.

It has a pattern throughout but I'm hoping they were common. Other houses in my street have the exact same tiles.

Any ideas where I can start searching?

  • Not too sure how useful this will be, but someone asked a similar question in ideal home last issue and I just remember reading it. They were about fireplace tiles, but I'm sure if they specialise in victorian tiles, they'd stock floor tiles too. The company was Tile Heaven : 01952 433094

    Hope this helps
  • Thanks, just had a look on their web-site http://www.tile-heaven.co.uk and they have a comprehensive selection. I think I'll take a picture and email it over.
  • I don't think Tile Heaven do "encaustic floor tiles" often referred to as Minton tiles.

Ask neighbours - some may have odd tiles taken up from floors that were replaced. Or odd tiles from a floor they have carpeted.

Try local salvage/architectural antiques. Try Salvo

    Ebay?

A useful restoration article with details of suppliers at the end of this article

The Original Flooring Company in Kings Heath, Birmingham completely replaced mine about 10 years ago, with "modern" reproductions that were difficult to tell from the originals (apart from wear & tear!). But they also carry a stock of reclaimed tiles (or certainly used to).

apart from checking out all the salvo yards, try your local college ceramics dept.
they may take on a project for you, esp if you offer to supply the costs of materials etc...?
    Get some gorm.

Er, ask the neighbours and hope someone has some in worse condition than you and isn't bothered about keeping them. Otherwise it's salvage and architectural antique type places to get a match.

You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

I really don't think they'd take it on as a project to do with the students but you might be able to get one of the lecturers or one of the more advanced students to take it on as a commission. You'd have to pay for their time and expertise, not just the materials.
  • Take a look at this great site posted on another thread by Canucklehead.
