deciding on work hours

hi all

i have got myself into a mind pickle

it is time for me to re-apply for my work-life balance and i have no firm idea what i should apply for. i have 2 children with disabilities both under 6.

my dh works funny shifts so i work 3 days around him - picking from the following:

my options are:
saturday any shift (but not spend weekend with family) paid extra
sunday any shift (but not spend weekend with family) paid extra
monday PM (but miss slimming class)
tuesday PM (but miss keep fit class)
wednesday AM
thursday AM
friday AM
(will need thurs/fri off every 2 months for childrens hospital appointment 5 hours away)

it really is the work-life balance debate - i can apply to work weekends earning quite a bit more (time +1/3, time +2/3) but miss family life as dh is off on weekends,
or work in the week juggling everything else - and loose my social life & earn less

i'm going around in circles and just don't know what to do.....dh says to do what i think will work  i know there is no right or wrong solution - i just cannot get to grips with what I want...

  • Not quite sure what the issue is here. It's obviously one of the following two options, and I don't know which one

    Option 1

You already have a job and can pick your own shifts

    Option 2

You are applying for a job and are trying to decide what you can advertise yourself as being available for.

If it's option 2, I would just apply for whatever's out there - I think your problem will sort itself out due to the regrettable shortage of jobs at the moment!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • i'd work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday as then it gives you your free time

jobbing - thank you -its option 1. i already have a job, and every year have to apply for a work-life balance to decide which days i will work.....i am then committed for 12 months so need to consider carefully.

daw- i need just 3 shifts - not sure how much it will annoy work if every 2 months i ask for the thurs/fri off to take the children to the hospital:cool:

still pondering - but thinking sunday, tues, weds....

How flexible are your employers? Would they be fine with you working on a diff day every couple of months to take kids to hospital? Or will they take the view that you knew this would occur when you asked for your days and should have taken that into account and not worked them? Are there any other slimming classes/keep fit classes that run on diff days that you could attend instead?
  • What about self employment? Do you have anything you can do which other people would pay for?
