What is the best way to get connected to the internet using my mobile phone?

Hi folks

I have an HTC Wildfire S. Usually, when I click on the internet icon, the phone connects to the internet (after about 20 or 30 seconds).

However, there is also an option on my phone to turn on the wi-fi, before attempting to connect to the internet.

Can someone please advice the purpose of this wi-fi and the pros/cons of turning it on prior to attempting to connect to the internet.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Wifi - for use with your home broandband router or outside with free wifi hotspots
Internet through mobile network - to use when you can't get wifi (which is likely to be quicker than the mobile network speed).

With the HTC wildfire (previous version of Wildfire), you could press and hold the power button and selection whether to use wifi or mobile network. If you are getting 20 second delays, then you might have both turned. Suggest you choose one or other.

Cost is the main driver for using wifi whenever you can, most folks may only have a 500 Mb /month allowance for data on their phone.
Excess charges can be punitive, so use wifi where you can and avoid this.

If you log on to the Cloud website you can find some of the hotspots in your area. Macdonalds for one.

FYI, Sky bb users will be getting access to the cloud later this year for free.

I don't have a smartphone myself, but wouldn't wi-fi access tend to be faster than 3G too?

As a total guess... would 5Mb/s be normal for 3G and maybe 15Mb/s for broadband via wifi?

Thinking about it, though... I guess you aren't going to be transferring a lot of data to a smartphone so the network speed probably isn't that important...?

I get about 1.5Mb on 3G and 1.2Mb on Wifi. Says a lot when my mobile phone gets faster internet than my PC.
