Acer 531H Laptop - Slow even after reformat

No probs sharing folder/files across XP/Vista/7.
This is just a suggestion, not a permanent solution.
Go into start/run and enter "msconfig", and return (no quotes).
In the pop up panel, on the services tab, click on "hide all MS services", then click in "disable all". Next click on the startup tab, and also click on "disable all"
Reboot the PC, the PC should now boot in about 40-50 secs. If it doesn't after a new re-install, I would look at the event logs and see where there may be an issue.
If it does boot quickly, you can play around with the non-MS services/startup items to see which/what might be delaying matters - if you have any HP hardware, one item that can cause issues is the HP printer cue/update software0 -
There's nothing 'secure' about Rapport, it's just a piece of spyware.
Another 1GB of RAM wouldn't go amiss. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I'm of the 'you can't have too much RAM school'...
True, you can run XP on 0.25GB, but you can't do much else with it!No free lunch, and no free laptop

^^^ I know where you're coming from, but for most uses, half a gig on XP is fine and it's money-saving

My ACER Netbook with XP, was useless at 512MB and most useful at 1.5GB RAM.0

^^^ in what way was it useless ?? What was it's commit charge and how many processes did you have running at idle ??? XP can be running with around 16 processes at idle, with a commit charge of 130-ish meg...so with 512 RAM it should go ok.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
