Are you giving up anything for lent, how does it work with OS

Dh and i want to give something up 'for lent'. Though i am from a christian background, and proud of that, i am no longer a practicing Christian, and dh isn't one at all, but it seems as good a time as any to appreciate what we have, practise some sacrifice and improve our health. We already give uo alcohol for the first quarter of the year.

But we cannot decide what to give up! Dh suggested carbs, ut i find increasingly a piece of toast is the perfect os meal, underneath some spinach and an egg, or some beans for me. I think it would be quite expensive for me to as simply reace this, or a crumpet which i also use. I suggested fats or sugars, but dh blinked sorrowfully at his olive oil and said he would if we couldn't agree on something else.

Meat would not be good, as we have just had a meat delivery for the freezer that will last us a LONG time, not using some of it during lent would be a great shame!

I wondered what other oser's give up for lent and how it impacts on your meal plans and grocery budget.

I am going to try to give up crisps. This is going to be very hard as I swear they have some kind of nicotine type addiction for me.

The impact will be that I should be able to have more NSD's as the one thing I always fall down on are the crisps. I cannot have them in the house as I would eat them all in one go.

How about giving up one type of thing rather than a whole food group?
  • Mine's always chocolate too or alcohol, but I've only managed to succeed in the challenge once! :rotfl:

    Give up giving up :rotfl:
Why not pick an action rather than a particular food, you can tie this in with MSE habits - give up wasting food, or skipping breakfast, or delaying things until "another day"? Give up a Sunday morning lie in, in favour for a walk/jog in the morning mist? Give up using the car to get to the shops (if it's practical)?

We're giving up meat on one more day a week-we don't eat it on Fridays anyway so will have at least two meatless days a week.

Better for our health (I hope as I have high cholestrol) and the budget

We don't eat enough chocolate or crisps, or really any single thing, to make it worth giving up iywim.

I suppose. We could give up leavened bread, to make it more traditional, but there goes my toast again!

You could try a "cut down to a given amount" rather than totally give up something. Or like the above poster says, a specific thing rather than a category.

Caffeinated drinks? Sweet desserts? chocolate? unhealthy snacks?

If I had willpower I would give up chocolate...
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Thats a good idea. I will talk to dh about that sort of thing. We both get up early...though he often lets me lie in at the weekends while he does the critters for me.:o

Sadly i would find it impossible to give up the car, but i do routinely manage 5 no spend days in a week and fairly often four no car days!

But routine doing something is a great plan, something i can see several ways that we could do it and for free!

Its true its drastic and generally ill advised to cut out a food group. We eat reasonably healthily but not puritanically, and we eat a large range of food. I feel that for it to be something we thnk about it needs to be significant enough. Cutting out something that is calorific would certainly not go amis ps for me though!
