Wow no wonder someone put a razor blade in his donut he sounds like a complete p!!!k. Im also not surprised that one person never came back after their break.

If he carries on with that, I wonder what hed do if the rest of the team walked out one day and left him to work on his bonus by himself..?

I think, if I was the OPs friend, I would go to HR with my entire team, and complain about this manager, and make a huge fuss about it. Its totally disgusting the way this man is acting.

I have just read this thread and am now sat here in horror!!!! As someone who carries a card that says please allow me access to toilet ( I can show it in shops - thankfully I havnt had to!!) I cant think of anything worse than being told how long I am allowed to pee!!!
OP - I hope your friend gets this sorted soon!!

  • This is the thing, ie that it's bad enough for healthy people to be restricted from taking loo breaks when necessary - but a sight worse for those with some sort of health problem.

I have been wondering since reading this thread just whether the "man with a bag" health problem is going to feel confident about even TRYING to hold down a job whilst he is at risk of suffering humiliation like this. I would have been mortified in his position and wouldn't have dared ever ask for another callcentre job ever again (ie in case it happened again, due to harsh loobreak policies).

I'd be horrified enough, as a normally healthy woman, at the thought of how on earth to handle loobreak policies if I worked in a callcentre. When I had periods they were irregular/heavy/long. You get the drift. It was sometimes troublesome dealing with them and ensuring no-one was ever aware I was having one, even without being subjected to loobreak policies. I'm sure I would have suffered embarrassment/humiliation occasionally if I hadn't been able to go to the loo freely whenever I needed to, as there were times when I had absolutely no option but to "take off and run" to the loo as fast as I could without it being obvious it was "Woman in a hurry...do NOT stop me".

Totally depends how long you spend in the toilet and if it is excessive.

If you are using it as a *break* eg more than 10 minutes and actually gossiping in the toilets etc then I'd almost be tempted to point out the amount of time smokers take as a break.

I did hear years ago of Bourjois (near where I live in Surrey) used to be really strict on toilet breaks - and they timed you. So if an agency ever offered me a job whether it was temp or perm there I just said no!

Also, a few years back a colleague of mine, when she got upset (her father was ill with cancer then died) she used the toilet to go and have a cry (yes, some may say unprofessional but what could she do?), once or twice our boss (who was also making her upset due to stress) followed her down to the toilets. I'd have been straight onto HR in this case.

I was speaking to a friend of mine this evening and she said her boss humiliated her at work todayby sending and email around the office stating how long people had taken a bathroom break for, by compiling a list from the day before.

She said she asked him why he had done it and his reply was because it was something he will be doing everyday from now on so people can hit their targets.

My question is: Does this happen where you work or is it something what people should expect to see no matter where you work.

I did suggest going to HR but I don't know if there is anything they can do.

No it's not. I'm not going to call the company name but I am very shocked that this kind of practice is going on.

Anyway my friend will be of to HR tomorrow so hopefully she may have more news for me.

  • I'd be asking how much worktime this manager was spending monitoring everyone's loo breaks!

    Monday update:

My friend has just got of the phone to me saying that when she went into work this morning only three staff members (her being one) turned in today plus the manager. Usually there are 10 staff members plus manager on her team.
She said mid-morning she went to the bathroom and when she came back the manager shouted over to her where the h**l have you been, what the f**k have you been doing in the f******g bathroom.

She said she could feel her face turning red and tears welling up in her eyes after once again being humiliated,

One of her male co-workers went over to the manager and told him to sit down and shut up as he has had enough, the whole incident was witnessed by other staff members and other managers and by time she blinked she was asked to go to HR.

They had a chat with all three staff members (individually) and was asked to forward all emails, evidence ect and asked if they wanted to take matters further.

My friend asked to be transfered to another team as she felt she could no longer could work under her manager as she hadn't slept all weekend stressed about putting a foot wrong. She was told that no-one needed to change teams as her manager has now gone on extended holiday.

She was worried as she thought that the contact center manager had authorised the new bathroom breaks rules and it was something that her team was piloting, she was shocked when HR said it was not authorised by the contact center manager nor will it be hence why no other team are doing it.

Good result achieved, it would have been nice if it hadn't had to be done with so many people hurt and embarrassed.

Hopefully that manager will be out on his ear now.

I hope so to, he only got the job in December and he was seconded.
I wonder if they will offer him his old job back on the phones again?
It's amazing how some people change when they climb up the ladder, he clearly has no people skills
