I think I might start timing how long the manager took.... :)

I'd be tempted to go and do my business directly on his desk, then tell him how much time I saved by not having to walk all the way to the toilet.

It would really stress me out if I knew someone was watching and timing my toilet visits - I would really like to see how a company got on if this was challenged legally or on health grounds ie stress causing or inflaming conditions like IBS etc and it would be obvious if a woman had a period and was slightly longer. If someone had cystitis or upset stomach and would have maybe still tried to get into work this would surely make them more likely to phone in sick?

Disgusting management really, what an awful place to have to work.

Is wandering off with a copy of the Daily Mail under your arm considered a little over the top?

    UPDATE:

My friend has just sent a text saying that when she got in work this morning the manager had sent the team an email saying that they have two ten minute breaks and they should use that time to have a bathroom break.

Anyway one of her co-workers has just been sent home because he wears a bag and it overfilled and messed him up and the chair he was sitting in.

I am in shock, I have never heard of people being treated this way ever. Anyway she said she will give me the full rundown when she finishes work.

That is horrendous for that co-worker..

How many hours are they expected to go between breaks?
I would send the email a manager back saying what if I start my period?
It is dangerous to hold even urine in. The workers should challenge this via HR.

I did challenge a not so drastic ruling in one company and they had to relent, they could not stop me going to the toilet as and when I needed to. I'm not sure on the legal side of this though or whether they backed down because they thought they should.

Sorry, what is a bathroom break? The last place I worked did not have any company bathrooms. I thought only miners and footballers took baths at work.

I asked my friend the same question and she said the name was changed as people complained as they found the original name offensive.

What was the original "offensive" name?
