2 1/2 year old Fridge Freezer packed in!

We bought a Beko fridge Freezer from Comet in July 2004 for £297.
We didn't purchase any extended warranty as we believe these are generally a rip-off.
However, the bloody compressor has packed in - the main component of a fridge freezer and will cost £234 to replace according to an independant engineer.
Do I have any rights to recompense from Comet? A repair/replacement or contribution to the cost of a repair/replacement?
I can't believe it could develop such a major fault in such a short space of time.
Many thanks in advance.

Annoying as it is, I doubt you have a leg to stand on.
It was a cheapie, you took a chance & you were unlucky.
I have a warantee on my latest FF, but it's an american one & cost nearly £1,000, normally I don't bother.
My last one was a Bosch (I only got rid because I wanted the American style one), my friend has it now & it's still as good as the day I bought it nearly 9 years ago, So I can recommend Bosch as a replacement :D .

Bad luck though & yes I agree, a FF should last longer than a 1 year guarantee:mad: .

  • Why should how much it cost have any relevance? I don't think nearly £300 is cheap, especially if I have to keep shelling out every couple of years. Our old fridge which this one replaced must be 10 years old and is still going strong and that was a 'cheapie' as well. Shame it's no longer in our posession.
I contacted Beko and asked them what the life expectancy was for a fridge freezer, all they would say is the guarantee is for 12 months. When I asked if I was expected to buy a new fridge freezer every 12 months or so they said no, they can last 10 or 20 years but they are only guaranteed for 12 months.
Comet don't want to know, they said I'd either have to pay for repairs or buy a new one or take it up with Beko.
The independant engineer who diagnosed the fault said it was a fault that had developed, not wear and tear.
I have a baby and cannot afford to be without a fridge so I've had to get the engineer to order the bits to repair it. I was going to go the route of writing to Comet and the credit card company to get a replacement/repair but I simply cannot go for weeks without a fridge. Do you think they might pay for repairs done by an independant engineer or will I just have to chalk it up to experience?

I would go back to the retailer, I have been hearing lately that you can expect goods such as a fridge, to last at least 6 years and that you should have rights up until that time. Obviously wear and tear come in to play here. 2 1/2 years is nothing in the life of a fridge. Write to BEKO too.
  • out of curiosity what is the fault on your f/f,(not what the engineer has told you what is wrong)- I mean what were the symptoms that caused you to get advice in the first place? I can double check the fault with DH if this will help?
