We managed to stick to our mealplan pretty well, with one change. I didn't cook the chicken and had Pesto Pasta instead. So couldn't do Rubber Chicken on the Monday, but did manage to use up chicken breast I have left from being pregnant :)

This week we are batch cooking at the weekend again as it really helps keep us on track, as during the week is hardest, it keeps us away from the take-aways (and the shops)

So this week is as follows:

Fri - Cheese, Tomato and Onion Pizza with HM Chilli Mayo and Chips
Sat - Spaghetti Bolognaise
Sun - Pea and Ham Soup w/ HM Granary Rolls
Mon - Bolognaise on Chips w/ Veg
Tue - [STRIKE]LO Pea and Ham Soup w/ HM Granary Rolls[/STRIKE] :silenced: We had friends over Sunday, so didn't have enough. Made Tuna Fishcakes instead.
Wed - Pasta Bolognaise
Thur - [STRIKE]LO Pea and Ham Soup w/ HM Granary Rolls[/STRIKE] :silenced: As Tuesday, only DH is away so DS and I will have Pancakes!
Fri - Chinese Take-Away

The takeaway was supposed to be in June for our wedding anniversary, but I was sooooo sick during the pregnancy we have been waiting until now!

I wish everyone the best of luck this week x
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

Thanks for getting us started JG. That's a lot of pea and ham soup to eat, my OH wouldn't put up with soup for dinner, more than maybe once a month :( (and then that's if we have had a bigger lunch/been out for the day)

We changed a fair bit this week, most notably having a takeaway curry for dinner last night :( (but it was very very tasty :D) and tonight I'm making beetroot and goats cheese risotto rather than the planned swede speltotto, as I didn't get a swede in the veg box
We are planning rubber italian pepper stew brisket for Sunday, but I think I will probably freeze a fair bit of the leftovers, so we don't have too much beef in the week :)

Sun 5 italian pepper beef brisket, roast potatoes, kale
Mon 6 beef ragu and pasta
Tue 7 I think this will be mushroom stoup with dumplings, and sprouts
Wed 8 curly kale and meatball soup noodles
Thu 9 smoked cod florentine, boiled spuds
    Fri 10 pasta putanesca
    Sat 11 pork goulash
    Sun 12 roast chicken

Thanks, JG, for starting the thread. Here's my mealplan for the coming week:

    Mon: Pork Fajitas
    Tues: Shepherd's Pie
Weds: Chicken Tikka Masala with Rice
Thurs: Toad in the Hole and Beans
Fri: BLT Burgers with Chips & Salad
    Sat: Pastitsio
Sun: Roast Pork with all the trimmings

I'm going to do a spot of baking this weekend to make some cheese, onion and bacon pasties for the freezer and will pop in a batch of rock buns or something for the cake tin while I'm about it. Other than that it's the usual sandwiches for lunch and fruit or cake for puddings (if we want any), though there is a bit of ice cream left. Looking forward to a fairly frugal week next week!

I wandered off track twice last week, including buying a supermarket pizza one evening  - I must do better this week! I'm still trying to eat out of the freezer as much as possible - freezer things are (F):

Friday - fakeaway chicken inna bun with chips and salad
Saturday - cheese, ham and tomato stromboli (pizza Swiss roll - dough (F))
Sunday - beef stew (F) with cheesy muffin topping, carrots and cabbage
    Monday - turkey lasagne (F)
Tuesday - fish cakes (F) and veg of some sort
Wednesday - cheese and tomato pasta bake
Thursday - prawn Thai curry (F) and noodles

hotcookie - could you share the recipe for your Italian pepper brisket, please? I've recently discovered I rather like brisket in pot roast / stew-type recipes, so another one would be great. :)
Back after a very long break!
  • Our plan went awry last week - not enough leftovers and forgetting to take things out the freezer! Note to self - must try harder!! Our budget is VERY limited for the next few weeks so I need to be really careful.
SAT - Burgers (from freezer) with H/M Focaccia rolls and H/M Wedges.

SUN - 2 chicken breasts (from freezer) with pigs in blankets and stuffing balls, plenty of roasties
and veg will stretch this for 2 adults and 2 DC. Crumble for pudding.

MON - Fritatta with leftover potatoes.

TUE - Chicken casserole with Jackets (Whoopsie Ch thighs from freezer)

    WED - Pasta & pesto

THUR - Jackets with beans and cheese

FRI - Prawn curry & rice (prawns from freezer)

Lunches usually sandwich, H/M soup or cous cous. DD's have a school dinner. Breakfasts are H/M fruit bread, porridge or weetabix.
  • Hi all

We stuck to the plan this week and next week looks like this

Sun - Pork loin steak with veg and mash
Mon - Oven baked fish and chips
Tue - PAsta with HM sauce and cooked chicken pieces
Wed - Pea and ham soup
    Thur - Cottage pie
Fri - BBQ chicken and rice
Sat - Steak pie with oven baked HM chips.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

I posted this in another thread, it is lovely (I think I actually have silverside, and when I made it before I used shin/stewing steak as recommended, but thought it would make a lovely pot roast)

Sure-I have looked for a link online but can't find one, so will pop it down here-it is from the Bocca Cookbook by Jacob Kennedy (now THAT is a restaurant I want to go to!)

    Peposa (beef and peppercorn stew)

    80ml extra virgin OO
1kg braising steak, cut into 4cm chunks
    medium onion, diced
    3 cloves garlic, chopped
    25g whole black peppercorns
    15g coarsely ground black pepper
    1 bay leaf
    250ml red wine.
1kg tinned or 1.2kg fresh tomatoes, chopped

Heat oil, season meat, brown over medium heat for approx 15mins, making sure you get it nice and dark.
Add onion and garlic and cook for another 10mins, occ stir, until softened. add pepper and bay and fry for another minute, then add wine and tomatoes. bring to simmer, then turn heat right down and cook for 1.5hrs until meat is tender.

(I reckon my silverside will take about 3 hours, and I'll just do it in the oven, as my ceramic hob isn't great at doing a very low simmer. I also think this time I will add finely chopped carrots and celery with the onion and garlic, and as I'm not chopping the meat into bits I won't use as much oil. It's not a feed a family for a fiver dish, but we loved it, just the thing for a winters evening)
  • Hi all and thanks again to JG for starting the thread:

Things went fairly well last week, but because of personal situations - things didn't go as well as it should have done - so doubling the efforts this week, but having a treat tonight...

Thurs: Pick & Mix Tea from the freezer
Fri: Takeaway Pizza (treat with deal that came through on my mobile)
Sat: Pork Meatballs with Chipolte Sauce
Sun: Eat at DHs parents (will probably provide some veg for MIL)
Mon: Tarragon Chicken with pasta & broccoli
Tues: Salmon with red pesto, cherry toms and creme fraiche & rice
    Wed: Venison Casserole

Boughts some blueberries from Herr A last night, so going to make some muffins at the weekend.

    Have a good week all.

I've had a rubbish week sticking to the plan - culminating in me having a bar of chocolate and some toast for me tea last night :(

On wards and upwards - will do rest of the month plan this weekend and shop properly tomorrow
