Load of fuses, do they work?

Hi all,

I have been clearing out a drawer and found a load of fuses but have absolutely no idea if any of them work. Is there a quick way of testing them to see if they work or should I just bin them all?

Thanks,

Alley

There is proably a device that you can use to check them but I dont have one and probably you wont either. Or what you could do is put them in a plug (say of a lamp you know works) then if the light comes on the fuse is working and if it doest the fuse isnt. Just exchange the fuses you have found so you can see which ones works. Hope this helps

  • A battery a bulb and some wire is about the simplest. Or a multimeter.

Or the lowest tech I can think of, take a 9 volt battery like you get in smoke detectors, stick one end of the fuse on one battery terminal and your tongue between the other end of the fuse and the other terminal of the battery. If it's "ouch!" then the fuse is good and if not then the fuse is dud :-)

    DON'T DO THIS.
Apparently a number of people each year putting their tongue on a 9V battery like this to test it. Unsure if having a fuse between the battery and your tongue will make you any safer but personally I wouldn't risk it.

    Makes no sense.

  • If your heart is in your tongue then I think you have rather more to worry about than testing fuses.

As it is the suggestion was tongue in cheek - or should that be tongue on battery? There are other reasons, beside the risk of dying by urban myth, for not putting a battery on your tongue, not least that it is a quite unpleasant sensation :-)

Go into your kitchen, expose the live wire on your kettle lead. Hold onto a metal tap with one hand and hold the fuse in your other hand. Then touch the fuse to the live wire.

If you are still alive, then the fuse is faulty.

If your are dead, well at least you no longer have to worry about the fuses. :)

There is a prize for the best suggestion for what is missing between “people” and “each year”.

My entry is “experience an orgasm”.
