Have You "Lost" Any Job Seeking Time Due to Agencies/Employers Stringing You Along?

I'm sure we've all heard things like "You are the favoured candidate" or "You tick all the right boxes" or maybe "The company definitely want you" shortly followed by any number of seemingly valid reasons as to why you can't start just at this moment.

I know that you should continue to job seek right up until the moment that you have a confirmed start date but I'm sure it's only human nature to be lured into a false sense of security when you're given the strong impression that a job you've applied for is yours.

I'm just curious to know if I'm the only fool that has been silly enough to get caught in this trap and "lose" valuable (?) job seeking time.

Yes, although it was a long time ago when I was an IT contractor. I went for the interview, the employer offered me the job and it all looked like it was hunky dory. They then messed around for several weeks, in which time I had turned down another contract and stopped looking for any more, only to turn round and say that they had lost the funding for the post and wouldn't take me on after all. I lost two months income but the up side was that I got a better contract elsewhere in the end.

Never stop looking till the day you actually start the job and sometimes not even then. You never know, there may be something better just around the corner.

I've been "so close" a few times that i've learnt to keep looking.

    Agree with the above.

Especially when you're in the first year (soon to be two) and employers can just turn around and get rid of you without reason.

I started a job last June and I still keep my eyes peeled as you never know what is around the corner.

    I did say that.

But, human nature being what it is, I'm sure that what should be done isn't always what is done.
  • I wouldnt listen to a word an agency said to me, they are in my experience a set of snakes!.
Your better off sorting out your own job, half of the time they have no work anyway.
