  • Try Dobies - they often have reasonable fruit trees.

Woolies always have a selection of fruit trees around this time, for about a fiver we've bought a few in th epast and are very happy with them.

We also got a greengage and a cherry in Lidl two weeks ago for £3.99 each -real bargain

Have a look at ken Muir nurseries http://www.kenmuir.co.uk

I buy all my fruit trees etc from him. It's all mail order and you get a year's guarantee with all the trees as well. Not always the cheapest but I very rarely buy from garden centres or shops anymore because of the problems with disease and pests I've experienced in the past.

You need to be aware that fruit trees are usually grafted onto different root stocks to promote vigour and control the final size of the tree. The cheapest ones may or may not be grafted and if so, may not state which root-stock is used.

I have just bought a Victoria Plum on a semi-dwarf rootstock (called St Julian A) which will produce a tree with a final height of 8-10 foot. Although I generally hunt around for garden bargains, I have paid £24 for this tree from a real nursery as it is more likely to be healthy and disease-free. It is also guaranteed for 5 years. It will also have been kept in the correct conditions as opposed to drying out in a warm shop.

I am considering it as an investment for the future.
