how much from a pot - help to us newies pls

I only have a patio garden so was going to grow in pots. First of all can I begin planting seeds in the pots outside now , ie tomorrow ( Live in Lancs) or should they all begin on a windowsill in a propigater( spelt wrong I know !) and then transfer them.
I have a few very big tubs, loads of smaller ones and a spare dustbin since the delivery of my wheelie bin. I guess potatoes go in the bin. what other stuff goes where.
Hoping to grow, pots, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, onions, turnips, cauli I guess anything
Do peppers, chillis grow in the kitchen windowsill ? again should |I plant now?
And tomatoes and strawberries in hanging baskets.

I noticed fruit bushes etc and rhubarb stumps being sold in places like wilkinsons lidl and asda etc do we plant them now and are these things ok to buy ?
How much do you yield, I know ' how long is a piece of string' but a really ruff idea would help us newies !!!!
if you pick a carrot thats it - yes ! but if you pick a pepper to they grow another ?. What other stuff re-produces, and at the end of the year do you compost them or do they grow for a second year ( any examples welcomed)
Also when planting the seeds in seed trays or the ground do I mix in some blood, fish and bone stuff ?

Sorry for all the questions I bet you are wondering why I bother if I know so little, but the image of a full garden of veg and fruit is hard to ignore !!!!

  • to answer parts of your question...

*almost all vegetables are ANNUALS - in other words, sow, crop then compost - start again next year
*notable exceptions include: asparagus (crops 3rd year onwards), rhubarb (crops 2nd year onwards), raspberries (crops annually, but if you prune them correctly the plants keep going for ages/ever)

    *crop expectations:
sweetcorn (1 or 2 cobs per plant. plants need others to pollinate, 9" apart each way)
    onions (1 per seed/set)
    shallots (5/6/7 per seed/set)
tumbling tomatoes - a good size crop but likely to crop all together
climbing (cordon) tomatoes - a bigger crop spread over a longer period - you could put 3 in a growbag

    *other:
cauli - a brassica - can't imagine that this will thrive in a pot
pots - 2 tubers will live happily in a standard size bucket (or similar)
strawbs - 3 per hanging basket

cut and come again (CCA) salad - the more you pick the more it produces

when you are planing in seed trays, the nutrients in your compost will be sufficient for your seeds. Only when you plant out should you consider a feed - different times for different plants (read labels and packets etc)

I've just been reading this page:

    http://www.dobies.co.uk/GrowingGuides.htm

It should give you ideas of what you can grow in a pot. The examples here suggest using a 25cm pot which is not that big. My local pound shop or whatever it's proper name is sells 2 of these for either £1.99 or £2.99.

I suggest that you have a read of the above site and decide what you want to grow. Once you've done that have a look at:

    http://www.suttons.co.uk/pl_S-Veg_.htm

and decide on varieties and find out the sowing times (most will be Feb, Mar or April).

Some seeds can be sown directly into the soil (or container) and others need to be started in a propergator or seed trays on a window sill. Just read the packet.
