joint account dilema and the Halifax suck!

bit of a lengthy one but stick with it PLEASE!
for full details refer to my other post in mortgages, however my wife and i have a joint account
since she vanished in july i tried to maintain all the outgoings myself but i have since been off sick from work and only receiving ssp so the account crept up to its limit and over it despite my best £ juggling to stop it.
i phoned the halifax a couple fo weeks agho and asked if they would suspend the account to prevent charges - they said no , not without my wife's consent, so yet again i explained thast i dont know where she is or how to contact her as she is ignoring any attempts using previous email address and phone number and even a solicitor letter to what i believe to be her place of work in england.
yesterday charges notification of £165 for being over limit arrives.
i phoned telephone banking , explained it all again and she very helpfully said yes i can have it suspended but i need to go into the branch where the account is held.....thats 420 miles way, so she said any branch would do it and told me to ask for a suspension of account form.
I duly did this at the branch and was met with a blank expression and told no such form existed.
i was then put on the phone to a money management person who was only interested in arranging a repayment plan and no interest whatsoever in my plight.
got home , phoned telephone banking to tell them.
cant be done she says - aaaaaargh!¬!!
because the account isnt far enough over the limit it hasnt been passed to collections , if it had they would stop all charges.
i asked if she could not just do that and she said NO!
i said so you will contnue to add charges making the situation far worse than it already is and wait for it to default before doing anything about it?
basically yes she said

surely that is immoral and aside from totally disgusting behaviour by the bank HALIFAX
i went to them for help and came away feeling totally destroyed
what can i do with this please??

i'd open an account with first direct and get the £125 bonus (so long as you can put in £1500 per month when back to work) i've had previous bad experience with the halifax. they are only out for themselves and dont care how much misery they make you suffer

I am sorry to hear you have been betrayed like this. The first thing I would do is get some legal advice to see exactly were you stand. As for dealing with the Halifax try and communicate via email so that you have some proof that you have tried to help yourself should this case go to court.

I hate the idea of joint bank accounts. No matter how much you trust your partner there is always the chance that they will tuck you up at some point. No doubt at some point in the past you would have ruled out your wife doing this to you, your story is not that uncommon. Going forward every man should have a CASHFLO

You are your own best friend come what may, all the best.
