Can my boss force me to give a leaving date now they know I'm planning on leaving?

My apologies OP - I didn't take in that you were not trying to sort of half resign, but that you only asked to confirm what your required notice period is, and then got pushed into the rest. While of course that is going to set a few alarm bells ringing to your employer, no, they should not have tried to push you into resigning. You are perfectly entitled to check your conditions of employment whenever you want for whatever reasons you may have.
I would just keep schtum for the time being and not get drawn on it.
On my comment that you would be out in a week if you were my employee, I was taking your post to mean that you'd handed in a letter of resignation but wanted to keep the leaving date open...which there is no way I would accept. This is not the case here, so that'll teach me to read and run!Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
OP, I do think the way in which you found out your notice period could have been handled better. Did you check your contract (or 'written statement of particulars' - pedants you know who you are!) first? If not, was there another colleague you could have asked, in a more subtle way? Any way hopefully you will get your new start date quickly and then you can resign with an actual date.0
