Type 5g gold bar into google and read the information given by various providers?
  • I am sure there is plenty of info on google, and most of it is trying to sell to you as opposed to providing information. There is also conflicting information. Google is great but you can't beat personal experience, considering its a long term investment, even though a small one. After all if every question was asked to revert to Google what would be the pointof any forum.

If you are looking to buy a 5g bar as a gift, then buy it with that intention rather than as an investment. It may well increase in value over time, but the spread between the buying and selling prices for these items does tend to be quite large.

The way to certify that it is genuine is to buy from reputable dealers rather than off the likes of eBay. There have been company names suggeted in other threads.

I though Gold might be good as a long term investment. It's the kids first Christmas and would rather give him something tangeble for the future as opposed to a toy. I am also the Godfather( not THE Godfather) and would like to make it poinant. I suppose I should make it more that 5 grams then lol.

A nice thought. If you search the forum with Advanced Search and search for the word gold in the titles it will bring back a list of threads. Some of these will have the names of reputable dealers. But you will have to try to ignore all the ranting and raving posts that are inbetween!!

Buy it from a good coin dealer or jewler. Don't buy one online.

A good way is to buy a coin instead of bullion. My mother gave me a Gold Sovereign bought from a coin dealer abt 12-15 yrs ago as an xmas present.
  • Check out proaurum.de - they do nice 'gift' packaged gold bars starting from 1gram. A 5gram bar will cost you about 230Euro (today). Its in German, so you might have to call them if you want to place an order, but I have dealt with them before and they were great.

Dunno if this will work or not:

It's not personal, It's strictly business.

I buy all my coins and the odd bar from this company. Excellent service they provide.

I agree Gold Sovereigns would make a better present.
