£12 for a credit transfer

I need to transfer some money from my bank account to my dad's. I don't have have a check book but We went to Natwest and they said I could do a credit transfer. I went in there yesterday to see what I needed to do and they said it would cost me £12 to do a credit transfer to my dads account. My dad thinks this is a bit steep. Is £12 a normal charge.
Come on you Irons

I am with the Halifax and they do not charge anything for it, I transfer money on the 1st of each money to my sisters account, I simply pop her deatils in and send it, no charge.

Why not set up a standing order and then cancel it after the payment goes, that should be free

    For a bankers draft yes.

You can transfer online for free but cant do BACs transfers in branch only CHAPS, alternatively set up SO as suggested above.

The only £12 charge listed on the NatWest rates & charges page is for a bankers draft. Is that what they offered you?

Have you got an online account?
You can do BACS transfers to personal accounts for free on most online current accounts - takes 3 days to transfer though!

(Will be instant in Nov 2007! see http://www.fastpayments.co.uk/)

A simple way. Withdraw cash from your account, then deposit into your dad's account. All do it in branch. Keep the receipt. Forget the £12 fee.

Cash is definately the cheapest and fastest way to to it....but if it's an amount you don't want to take out in cash you should be able to set up a bill payment on the account and do it that way. They use BACS for bill payments, so it will take 3 days, but there shouldn't be a charge for it....

Simplest is to walk into any branch of your father's bank and pay in a cheque from yourself using one of their paying-in slips available on the counter. You've obviously got his bank details already.

Yes I thought it was 2007, and your OP HERE also says 2007.
I think you need to edit this page ;) as your reply #4 says 2008?

Is your dad's account with Natwest too? If so you could always do a cash withdrawal and deposit it to his at the same time in the branch. This way, there will be no actual 'cash' withdrawal because they can just take it out of one and pay it into another over the computer and no money needs to come out of the till!!

If he isn't with Natwest then a transfer via online banking is the easiest way.....unless you don't have online banking so then cash is your best option really. Just make sure you ask them to put it in a sealed envelope and carrier bag so you can be extra safe in transit!
