  • It may not fill your ideal entirely but I can't rate the Playmobil one highly enough!! We've had ours for 5 years now and it's really gorgeous - my daughter has loved playing with it (weekends only!!) and I'd say it's great value for money. I took ages to find one too and wanted something playful but not babyish, pretty but not breakable and this was the only one I thought worked on every count. Having said that, if it had been out when I was buying I might have tried to get someone to knit me one (BookPeople have a knit your nativity book at the mo)... :-)

  • Our local branch of Home Bargains is selling nativity sets that you paint yourself. We already have a set that is around 18 years old, but I bought one of these for my son who is 13 and has special needs. He will need help with painting the figurines, but that will be an enjoyable afternoon once he has broken up from school. The set is £3.99, so definitely MSE!

There is also a more expensive nativity set that is also an advent calendar - it is fabric and you add a figure each day in the run up to Christmas.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fabric-Nativity-Advent-Calendar/dp/B0062K0Z70 - price is £25.93

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fabric-Advent-Calendar-Nativity-Scene/dp/B004CX8FI0 - similar, but currently out of stock

Although expensive, I think the fabric calendars are good value for money as they will last for many years and combine the advent calendar with the nativity scene.
  • I bought a wooden one from past times last year (or possibly year before), my 5 yo and 2 yo are currently acting out the nativity with them, it was from past times

I have the East of India one with the stable, which was a compromise from a much more expensive wooden one i wanted!

I'm currently living in Madrid and nativity sets are more popular than trees here. They sell special childrens ones which are less serious looking than the traditional ones.

Bought my Gran one last year which everyone commented on.

Reading this thread has made me consider bringing some gorgeous ones over to sell on ebay or the likes :rotfl:

  • My local RC Church has a little shop in the back of the Church (as most RC churches do) and they had some lovely ones for under a tenner (stable and figures). The shops are usually open at the beginning/end of Sunday Mass.
