The state benefit "week"

Sorry, have searched for this and am not coming up with anything.

Does anyone know if a "week" for state benefits (specifically Long Term Incapacity Benefit) starts on a Sunday or a Monday? Thanks all!

As far as I know the payment covers Monday to Friday

Is there a particular reason you want to know.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • When I first claimed income support, I went into the Job Centre on a Tuesday - it had been Bank Holiday the day before. The lady that dealt with my claim told me that I would miss out on a week's money as the claims all start on a Monday, so my clain didn't start until the following Monday.

    It depends on the benefit.
For some benefits at least - ESA - for example - the week starts on a day related to your NI number.
  • Thanks both. I always thought incapacity claims were over 7 days, not 5? If income support is Mon to Sun, then it looks like this may be the same.
  • Thanks rogerb. Goodness that's complicated!

JSA is done on the last 2 digits of the NI number. Which also determines which day you sign on (some Jobcentres dont strictly follow this rule - assumingly something to do with overcrowding prevention).

Not sure about ESA - I think it begins on a Monday.

What day will claimants be paid on?

Prior to the change, each benefit had its own pay day. Now, the claimant will get them on the same day. This will be determined by the last 2 digits of the claimant’s national insurance number - as follows:
Last two digits of National Insurance Number Pay day
    00 - 19 Monday 20 - 39 Tuesday 40 - 59 Wednesday 60 - 79 Thursday 80 - 99 Friday For example, if the last two digits of a claimant’s National Insurance number are 27, their benefit pay day will be a Tuesday.

    The benefits affected are

Jobseekers Allowance, Income Support, Widowed Parent’s Allowance, Bereavement Allowance, Widow’s Pension Widowed Mother’s Allowance, Maternity Allowance and Incapacity benefit and Severe Disablement Allowance.
  • I checked my bank statement today and found that a payment had been made from DWP with the ref: YP3**60A DWP IS,
I applied for Income Support 2 weeks ago but not had any letter rom the DWP, does this reference mean I have been successful?
