Problem with cordless phone

Can anyone suggest a solution for this?
I have a cordless phone with the main phone in the lounge and a second one in the bedroom. Both phones sit on base stations and have batteries in which recharge from the mains when they are on the base station.
The bedroom phone is fine. The lounge phone also has answerphone and a handsfree loudspeaker, which the second one doesn't have. This is where the problem is. The answerphone has been a bit dodgy for a while, but now, whenever I try to pick up messages, the phone just dies. Similarly, when I use the loudspeaker, it dies after a few minutes. Also, if I leave the phone out of the cradle, even just for a few minutes, say if I am expecting a call, it won't answer the call. None of these problems are present in the second phone, so I end up bringing the second phone into the lounge, which is a bit ridiculous.
I am wondering if it could be the rechargeable batteries at fault? (I have had the phone about 2 years).
I don't want to have to buy a new phone - Any suggestions?
Thanks, Daisy

Try swapping the batteries from the phone which works to the phone which doesn't. This will tell you if you have a battery problem (cheap) or not.
