in Credit cards
Hi,
I had a call from HSBC fraud dept yesterday to go through my transactions! There was amount for 51p debited online, which wasn't me??? The bank said this is what they do first to make sure the card number is correct and then they will make the large purchases!
Anyway, they have cancelled that card and will send me a new one! Now the problem is that I need to take some items back to a shop for a refund! BUT I purchased them using this cancelled credit card and thus now the number on the reciept won't match my new card!
So will I still be intitled to a refund?

I have taken stuff back to Tesco before now, purchased with my Visa Card, went back on to my Maestro (different Bank too).
I have also had a refund to a different Visa card before, in Next I think, without any hassle when I explained why. I was no longer carrying the first card about with me as I had, in the meantime, moved a debt to it for a 0% balance transfer....I never carry my 'debt' cards in case I purchase on them by mistake.
I would go in for the refund and when they say, 'can I have your card', just hand over the new one (or in some stores you put it straight into the Chip & Pin machine yourself anyway).
Chances are they won't comment, but if they do just explain. You should be fine and I really wouldn't worry about it or you'll seem 'shifty' when it's just a refund/return.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

It would look dodgy if they do notice however - many companies are getting very hot on anti-money laundering and fraud both of which frequently use getting refunds to different cards as their methods.
It should not be a problem getting a refund back to the old card and this would then be applied to the existing account - it is only the card number that is changed and not the account behind the scenes - but if you are concerned double check with your card issuer first. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
