Another loft question

When boarding a loft for storage do you have to add new joists, my house is a 1930's semi, or would it be ok to go straight onto the joists, i am thinking of storing camping equipment, and the odd tools and suitcases

Ideally yes because if you compress the insulating material it becomes far less effective as its the air entrapped in it that creates the thermal insulating boundary.
