Someone answered my landline...but I am home alone

My mum just called me twice on the landline. I am in bed sick so I never answered. She then called my mobile and said that a man answered the second call and there was a lot of foreign babble. I am at home alone????

Sorry it's not money saving but I am wondering what is going on. Is my line being tapped or something?!

    Have you tried calling your landline number from your mobile?
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Just tried and it went to bt answer service. One of her calls went to the answer service, the other was answered by a (foreign?) male.

    Report it as a fault. There have been many reports (strangely, more of them on Virgin cable lines) of crossed wiring (usually in roadside cabinets) resulting in this sort of thing.

    Clearly, if you call your own number and it goes straight to voicemail when you can see the line is not in use, someone else is using the line somewhere else.

    Not quite shure what relevance Virgin cable lines have to the the equasion, especially as the OP refers to the line being answered by BT voicemail. If the fault isn't instantly repeatable, the chances of raising a successful fault report are slim.

    Whilst I agree it is an inconvenience, by far the most pertinent consideration (apart from privacy) is that if the line is cross-wired, doews it report the correct line number when the test number is called, and secondly, if the lkine had been erroneously or maliciously T'd off to another installation, any calls made would be on your bill, so a close check on the billed calling patterns and cost is the main method of defence.
  • What calls provider does your mother use?

    There have been reports on here that sometimes calls made via 18185 (and their associated companies) do not ring out at the intended number but instead are routed into some background conversation.
