Help - Garden Fence

Where I live is in the middle of a Housing Association and all the houses around us are having a new fence put in (have wooden, getting metal). We bought our house a couple of years ago so obviously they will not do ours and will want to charge us a ridiculous amount to do it...

Last year they painted the exterior of the houses - but not ours - they wanted to charge us £700 to do this (we live in a terraced house, so only 2 sides and the upstairs half only), so we told them where to shove it.

So, how much do you think it should cost to buy some metal fencing and do it ourselves? The fence is only about 12 foot long and about 2 foot high....

When I asked them to break down the cost for the painting - they could not do it and said it would be £700 - take it or leave it !!!

  • Metal fencing can be expensive dependant on the pattern used , plain rails or scrolls etc , have a look in yellow pages under welders and ring for a few quotesor you can get a set delivered for just over £100 from here.

If you want to replace the wood fence then I recently bought enough feather edge boards to do an 8 metre long , 0.9 metres high fence and 14 metres of 90mm x 40mm rails, all in treated timber for £33 , I already have posts but they were quite cheap though.
I got them from a local sawmill that opens to the public on Saturdays but I also had prices from other suppliers ( places that sell to general public every day ) and some were only slightly dearer.
  • I look into that after they have told me a price. Should be getting a knock at the door soon asking me if i want the work done.

Luckily, where I work I support the accounting systems of a few builders merchants so may be able to get things a trade price...

My neighbour paid £300 to have just the front of her terraced house painted last year. These are 1930's houses & it's just the upper bit that needs painting as the lower half is all brick. I did think it was a bit steep, even by Greater London prices I confess.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Yep, exactly the same as mine.... the contrators think that as we own the house we can afford it... my mortgage is DOUBLE what the tenants pay in rent. And they get all the work done for free....
