Mine got over 10 years & 200k miles and didn’t blow even then.
It developed a bad contact at the bulb connector which overheated and melted the bulb base & connector (which only comes as part of the igniter)0 -

Your friend is talking rubbish. A VDRS is 14 days and if you don't comply it's a summons you get not a ticket. If a ticket is issued then it's £30 and no points.0
