Does one sick day harm your record badly/ harm your probhation period. Worried :(

Basically I work as a care assistant. I absalutly adore this job and get on with everyone and would hate to !!!! it up in anyway.

Anyways. Today I had terrible toothache, but went into work anyway at 2pm, as I was working a late shift. My tooth kicked up so bad I had headache with it and started being sick. My boss said she was sending me home, and she gave me a lift personally. She told me to ring in morning if I am fit for work (which I will try my honest best to be) and told me not to worry about it.

My question is since I only officially started on 31st october (was agency before). will it harm my work record in a major way, considering it was employer herself who sent me home.

I am just worried because on the 6 week reveiw it says "more than two absenses" which is obviously a no because I am going straight back. But also on the end of probhation assesment it says "any authorised absenses" will one day harm my record? one day in 6 month

  • Doubt it will do any harm at all, as long as you are good at your job.

If your crap however, it could be a useful excuse.

Been told by many I am good at my job, and I get on with everyone. I like my managment as well. Like I said she gave me a lift personally and told me not to worry.

It is just with an official start date of 31/10/11. It means I have only been offically there for 9 days. 1 day off in 9 doesn't look good. But in fairness I did turn up I got sent home because I couldn't battle on.

I never ring in sick, I just do my best for what I can until I am physically sent home.

More than two absences might mean 'more than two occasions' rather than 'more than two days'. No one can help a sick day or two when genuinely ill, so I wouldn't worry, your boss has seen you weren't faking. Just make sure you are doing well in your job when you go back!
Our work has a policy of investigation if you are off sick more than three occasions in six months - I don't think its ever come up in our office but its there to spot the people who have a pattern of sickness on monday mornings etc.

I do very well in my job. I was willing to take some pain killers and battle on but my boss said I should go home and see a doctor and dentist and rest. I am going to do my best to go in tommoz I hate being off sick I feel like I am letting my collegues down.

It says more than two occasions. But surely today is one occasion, tommorow would be the second.

For example if someone has a week off, is that counted as one occasion or 7?

I had a day off sick in my job the week after I started too. It didn't make any difference to my probation at all. No doubt if you continue to take days off for toothache instead of getting it fixed, they will take against you.

One week would count as one occasion. Each illness is one.

When I started my job back in April, I had a hospital appointment the next day which made me late (they already knew about it in advance), 3 days later I had to go for a blood test (again, on the way in to work), then after a total of 17 days, I underwent an eye op that put me off work for a week. I'm still there, so I must be doing something right.

Your boss knew you had toothache as she drove you home so she knows you are not trying-it on.
