Patio sliding doors will not slide anymore

Seems to be the bottom sticking(would think they are on some kind of wheel type system) and they almost come of the base runner... so hoping somebody can advise on a solution. This evening was the 1st time it was hard to lock the doors also..They are around 10+ years old. Thanks Mrs Happy

  • are the doors upvc if so they will be on a track with wheels on the bottom of the door .If they have just gone stiff you need to check a couple of things first like -
    1) look along the track and see if anything has got jammed in there like a small stone this could cause the runners to come off the track espically as they are old doors and the track will wear over time metal to metal contact.

    2) spray the track with oil to see if this helps

    3) if the track is worn the chances are the wheels will be aswell which means replacing the lot not cheap and probably not a diy job because it will mean removing the door and possibly deglazing the door and removing the glass to get to the screws for the wheels (depends on door type etc).
you would be better off contacting someone that does double glazing repairs .
    good luck

We had the same problem. The doors were very hard to move. On close inspection the wheels had seized up. Water and dirt had got into the bearings and they would not rotate. Lifted the door slightly with a block of wood to lift the wheels off the runner and squirted a load of GT85 on them. Rotated the wheels a bit to free them and squirted more GT85. Worked a treat.
  • Thanks for info..have put some more WD40 on the runners and at least I can open then now...hard to see what the wheels are up to as there is no leeway to see but as soon as the weather breaks I'll get Mr Old on the act to investigate further......

They are metal painted sliding doors not the plastic type. I cannot see who they are made by either. The doors are used constantley so will have to do something soon about them one way or another. Thanks Mrs Happy
