It rather annoys me when the second, and even third place bidders almost never want the item when I send them a second chance offer (after a NPB wins the item). Why bid if you don't want to buy it?

I've been unlucky and had a fair few timewasters, so given that my settings are tight, I have had first or second time offenders giving me the runaround.

I doubt these people think I am shill bidding (I am not), because I have more than 500 feedbacks, all positive, and great DSRs.

According to some stats I heard a couple of years ago, the second chance offer pick up rate diminishes after the first hour of auction end, so if you send within the first hour the take up rate may be 50%, after 6 hours it drops to 20%, after a day it is 10%, etc (I made those up but you get the idea).

In general the reason is that the bidder has either bought a similar item elsewhere or spent the money on something else. Plus there's always the ones who have not got a clue what a second chance offer is and email a fortnight later asking if it is still available.

I see your point; I can't generally do a second chance offers until 8 days after the auction ends (ie the standard 4 days allowed to pay, then the 4 days standard time in which the case is open). This might explain the lack of takeup on my offers.

The chances are after 8 days the bidder's already bought.
If I'm bidding on something, it's either because it's something that I want asap or is really unusual, if the latter then I would take up a 2nd chance, as the chances are I wouldn't have found another. If it's something commonplace I would probably have either bought it or decided that I didn't really need it.
