I think I'd be inclined to send him to school and wait for the call from them to come and collect him. At least then they can't say that he's making it up or whatever excuse they want to use. Don't they understand that a national average doesn't mean your child is going to be less ill than everyone else!Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Just a thought - does he have a TV, games console, mobile phone in his room at night? If so, he could be getting less sleep than required which would have an effect on his immune system. I underslept in my early teens because of my love of books, and my attendance wasn't great for one term until my parents put a stop to it.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0

Metatone is a very good tonic which is sold in Boots, and helped pick up my daughter and I after a couple of colds/coughs. Any multivitamin sold in boots would be suitable for that age.0

at 13/14 I had tonsillitis for about 4 months on & off - sometimes I even managed a whole week a school before it came back
It's just one of those things that happens to teenagers from time to time. Go to the meeting armed with all the details from your GP so that every eventuality is covered. Throw in the suggestion that in future you will send him to school only for him to be sent home after cross-infecting half of the other pupils & staff.
For the national average to be 85.5% there has to be some children lower than that, to make up for the 100% attenders.0 -

Thanks Justie which multivitamin would you or any one recommend that I give him as he is fed up with his absences and illnesses as I am!!:D
if he continues to get little infections ask if the GP can do a blook test to check his immune system and see if his vitamin levels can be checked.
Does he do regular exercise? There's a suggestion that people who exercise regularly are more able to throw off colds etc quicker - obviously if he's ill he shouldn't be stressing his body but it may be worth trying to encourage him to be more active when he's well.0 -
My DS suffered baly with one thing after another until he was through puberty and has hardly ailed since. Hopefully your DS will grow out of it.
If you think there is a chance of him trying it on send him to school. They will soon send him home if they think he is ill. This kills two birds with one stone because if they send him home they cannot grumble that he isn't there!0 -
My ds attendance last year was only 60% he was ill all the time it was a vicious circle, he would get tonsillitis, then no sooner than that would clear up he would get a ear infection, then he would pick up what ever bug was going round at the time, then back to tonsillitis. It's a total nightmare. He has had his tonsils out now but he still seems to be prone to pick up any bug that's around.
It's an unfortunate fact of life that some kids tend to catch everything under the sun.
I totally agree with jamjar, Metatone is really good when you are run down. Also, as boring as it is try to make sure he is eating plenty of fruit and veg and getting as much fresh air as possible.
I hope your ds is feeling better soon.0 -

that is exactly what is happening looby- one thing clears up and along comes another, not two weeks ago he was screaming in pain with an ear infection, previous to that was tonsilitis, then there was the shivers and shakes and unable to get warm with sweating and on and on....
Yes, he does have a tv in his room but his dad takes the remote control/aerial off him at 9pm sharp each night because he says all the gadgets are a distraction and on a school night 9pm is enough for a 13 yr old, son whines a lot about it but that is the house rule....you go to bed to sleep not to play on the PSP!!
I am going to boots tomorrow and will ask about multi vitamins, the school, us as parents, himself we all know this can't go on much longer, not only will his school work suffer but also it affects the entire family where I have to stay at home etc so I will definetely be paying for good quality multi vitamins to boost him up.... xxx
yes he does regular excercise, football, rugby any kind of sports he is in there playing it, loves his sports, not a side line watcher0 -
I have the same problem with my 15 yr old daughter, school were awful and the education welfare officer became involved, wrote to both detailing trips to gp etc and , ashamed of myself here, sent her into school when poorly so they could see that she was genuinely ill and not pulling a fast one. School have been much better since and no further word from the ewo. Perhaps as suggested you could ask your gp to run some tests in the meantime I hope he feels better soonBewitched2761

If you have a look in places like Holland and Barret then they have good own brand and branded vitamins at good prices. Some people would say to give high doses of vitamin C but there is evidence that this can cause problems long term so I wouldn't recommend it unless it's on doctor's advice. If you can afford it then I'd also give him a good fish oil tablet too but the good ones (brands like eye-q) aren't cheap it won't necessarily help stop him getting infections but will help generally with his over all health and well being.
If you are thinking of buying eye-q, it's £9.99 but large tescos stock it, on offer at £6.99 currently with a £2 off voucher in quit-it packs and a further £1 voucher in the health and beauty packs (see discounts board for more info).Works out at £3.99 a bottle.
I only know because i bought some more for my DS saturday night!0
