Alliance & Leicester Current Account

Hi,
I know that MSE.com recommends A&L as the best current account. I used to have an account when they were doing the £50 refer a friend scheme. I recommended two friends and sent off the form in order that we would get the money. They opened the account for both my friends however none of us received the £50 incentive. the customers service was also terrible and they messed up one of my friends direct debits costing them money. Has anyone else experienced this?
The other thing was that I closed my A&L account about 9 months ago and opened a Lloyds account (I like the 2 year regular saver at 8%). I am thinking of reopening an A&L account in a few months so that I can take advantage of the linked 12% regular saver. Does anyone know if I will be able to take adavantage of the refer a friend scheme this time around?
Thanks
