Ebuyer & VAT

I'm not sure exactly where to post this, so I just have it in this category
I live in the UK only four months and I don't know details about VAT on products. But I was rather confused when I bought something recently from ebuyer.com
You get to see a price for the product you are interested that is without VAT. VAT is added on the checkout. But at that time they add VAT for the shipment also!!! So the price gets higher at the end.
My questions is if this logical, legal or just common practice??? I haven't seen this before and it really astonishes me.
BTW if anyone can just tell me what are the "categories" for VAT I would really appreciate it. (Something like: Jewellery: 36%, Food, 8%, Electronics etc: 17,5%)
Thanks!

It's a fairly standard practice, although different companies do things in different ways.
Basic VAT is 17.5% and it applies to nearly everything, however certain things are exempt (food for example). There is a lower VAT Rate for fuels.
This may help explain:

In the UK VAT is charged at 17.5 % on most things apart from Food which I belive is 0 % and fuel eg.. gas which is lower than 17.5%, yes this is a legal requirement in the uk if the company is VAT regeristered.
Hope this helps
