Buyer not happy so I'm offering a full refund but who pays for return postage?

Hi

I sold an item on Ebay and buyer is claiming its not as described and wants a full refund (including initial p&p). To save any hassle I'm willing to offer a refund but who pays for the return postage?

Obviously I'd prefer to have the item back before I issue a refund?

Buyer starts off paying return postage but when you get it back you refund the return postage aswell
this advice is ONLY for not as described and change of mind the return postage will always be paid by buyer

Ok thanks for your help. Just thinking how I'll actually get too pay for the postage as he'll have too take it to the post office - suppose I can send him money via paypal for the cost of the return postage then when I receive the item I'll refund him the cost of it plus p&p in paypal.

You need to refund (on receipt of goods) the original costs that the buyer paid. It is up to you to pay for return postage if you are a private seller. not sure about business sellers.

DON'T refund him until you have the item back. If upon inspecting it, it is as described then do not give him the money for the return postage, unless your feeling generous.

If you pay the return postage you can send him a paypal payment after you've received it back.
If he opens a dispute he would be told to return at his own expense. I would refund the return postage if I had misdescribed it but if it was a change of mind, or the buyer didn't like it then I wouldn't.

Thanks for the help so I'll have to send him money now via paypal to pay for the cost of returning it? He claims he's not paying for anything?

Sorry but I would not do that. Do not refund anything till you have the goods in your hands.

no you don't pay him anything until you have the item back.

when you have the item back you can either

refund the full amount he paid to you (item and postage out) - you need to use the refund button on paypal, not just send him money through paypal, and you'll get the paypal charges back. If you think you were fair when describing the item this is what I would do. (assuming you aren't a business)

or if you think you did make a mistake when listing then still get him to send it back before you refund, refund his original payment and then pay him whatever it says on the parcel label through paypal.

If he goes through paypal as item not discribed they will tell him its up to him to send it back to you signed for at his cost.
