why do people get so offended and angry when i tell them they can't have an overdraft

    The rudest customer i have ever spoken to, when i refused to increase his overdraft, said to me "what is it with you, are you jealous because i earn more money than you do ?" Err, nope, Mr As*hole, it's because you already have an enormous overdraft that i know full well you can't repay. Understand ?
    Why would anyone think that they have the right to make comments like that to someone they don't know ? My manager listened to the rest of the call and agreed that due to his comments (there were other insulting comments too) we would close his account. Result ! No account, no overdraft, no nothing !! Didn't do him much good did it ?

    Good! What happened to the money he owed though? Would be a shame if it was just written off...

    When we close accounts, if there is a debit balance it has to be repaid straight away, unless the customer agrees to a repayment plan with us. We would have got the money back from him one way or another. If it's not repaid we send in the debt collection agents. I hope we did that, he was such a stuck up kn*b i would have loved to have been there with them. He was an employee of a very large English Broadcasting Corporation, seemed to think everyone was beneath him. Funny thing was, i earned more than him ! He obviously didn't realise i could see his salary. Think he was the tea boy there. :D
    I never looked at his account again, he wasn't worth it.

    As of many things in life you are either saying yes or no to a person who is in desperate need of the overdraft and when its a case of refusing the desired request you can only expect them to be unhappy/ annoyed at you as they will think that it is entirely your fault and yours alone who made the decision against them.

    I would put you up there with the following types,

    PCN Invoice Distributors, ( Hated by all )
    Traffic Wardens ( as above )
    Cold Callers ( again as above )
    Telephone Operators within any business ( Hated by the majority )

    Just because someone works for a business or an organisation, this does not mean they completely agree with how their employer operates. They could be doing the job to simply earn money and pay the bills, not because they share all the beliefs and values of their employer.

    Amen, some common sense at last.

    It is just human nature im afraid, as they would just blame the person at the other end of the phone.

    It doesn't seem to have been said, so I will: an overdraft is a PRIVILEDGE, nothing more. If the bank thinks the customer should not have one (or have more), there is usually a very good reason for this, and is most likely to do with the customer's affordability.

    If you are unhappy you can move to another bank, it's a free market...

    Not sure how the account was closed if he had an enormous overdraft.
