New job subject to credit check

hey, not sure if this is in the right section but:
I've just been offered a job by a travel company, subject to a credit and criminal record check (standard procedure I assume).
my worry is that they wont offer me the job based on my credit rating.
When I was a student I took out a £1500 overdraft, and it kept once I graduated, I was around £200 over that (£1700-1750 range) and a few months ago they called that in and said I have to pay it within 6 months. i've had payment plans with them in the past that i couldnt keep up with because i wasn't working and £40 a month is a lot to someone without a job.
Additionally, around the time I lost my last job (jan 2010) i had a orange mobile phone contract that I couldnt keep up with, and they ended up charging me for the phone and cancelling the contract and since then I've been trying to maintain payments but obviously have missed some then set the arrangement up again etc etc.. without a job its been ridiculously hard to maintain payments, even little amounts like £15 a month
I was just wondering if this will affect me actually getting the job, and/or there is anything I can do to drastically improve this before november 14th when I am supposed to start the job.

Hi! My current job subjected me to the same checks and like you I was worried as I have had various missed payments. I was given the opportunity to declare anything beforehand and I put down every little thing on my credit file. I got the job. They should ask if you have anything bad before they do it and just be honest. They're more interested in ccjs and bankruptcy. HTH.0

Normally for these types of checks they aren't interested in a "credit score" as a lender would be but are looking at how responsible/ trust worthy you are and so things like defaults, CCJs, IVRs etc are of interest rather than how near your credit limit you are or if your on the electoral register etc.
You really have two options, either keep silent and hope all is well or tell them up front of your background and explanation and head it off at the pass. You'll probably find it easier to explain in advance than try and argue it afterwards but at the same time others will say you should leave sleeping dogs lie0 -
I don't think CRB is standard for the travel industry. It does not appear to be a position where you are dealing with vulnerable people - unless this is specific to the role....
