Interview with a council

Any council/public sector specific recommendations?

I know 'Equality and Diversity policy' can be important - though I'm still not entirely sure how to put this across - I don't mind what gender/race people are - do I just say this directly (it always sounds a bit too obvious)

anything else?

I've had a couple of interviews with public sector organisations and the 'diversity' question is often one of the key questions on their list.

A good thing to say is something like "Respecting and responding to diversity is not about treating everyone the same, it is about recognising people's differences and catering to their individual needs."

For an example, you want to describe a situation where you have responded to a diversity issue - it could be as simple as "One of my clients has a hearing impairment and struggles with telephone calls. We discussed how I could best communicate with her about the service she is receiving and now I ensure my communication is carried out in person or in writing."

Check out their press page to see if they have launched any specific initiatives you could mention too.

Don't forget that diveristy covers more than race and gender - you have sexual orientation, ability, religion, age...

^^ what they said. There's a whole lot more than race and gender to equalities and diversity. Questions may be 'how can we put our equality and diversity policy into action?' or how do we monitor it or things like that. Make sure you're familiar with the policy and any reports on it.
