Job offer problems

I have been in my current job for nearly a month and it is low paid and I have had a few issues there but my work is good.

I interviewed for another job in the summer and at the time I was told that I interview well but they decided to give the job to someone else with more experience. I got a phone call and email from the employer two weeks ago telling me that she now has a position available for me and would I be still interested in the job. I said yes however I am now having second thoughts about giving in my notice at my current job.

It took me nearly 3 months to find my current job and if I hand in my notice and the new job does not work out I could be facing Christmas without a job.

The new job pays nearly double than what I am earning now which is why I said yes to the job offer.

I do not know what to do but I have to make up mind in the next couple of days because I have to hand in my notice soon if I am going to the new job.

First, get the job offer in writing. See whether it is conditional on the receipt of satisfactory references. If there are conditions, ensure they are fulfilled before handing in your notice.

The role is similar to my current role which is sales and you either sink or swim in those roles if you sink then they get rid of you very quickly.
  • Definitely agree with Littlevoice to wait until you have an offer in writing before you do anything. I think the double money would tempt me to try it. If you don't like it you can always look for something else. The only time I would say to stay where you are is if you totally love the job and colleagues and the money doesn't matter! I know it's not all about money, but it helps ;)

In your position, I would ensure I had a firm offer in writing.

Then, as you seem in two minds, talk to your current employer first.
If they think you are as good as you and the alternative employer do, then your current employer may well go a long way to close the pay gap, as they won't want to lose a good sales person.
If they do, then it sounds like you would prefer to stay where you are.
If they don't, then there is a message there ;)

    Thanks Guys

Okay I had a job offer email confirming pay, start date, hours and that the job was full time and permanent it a firm job and there are no conditions for references or a mention of a notice period.

My current employer would never match the basic salary as it is nearly double what I am currently earning and my current company are also very cheap and like to cut costs in all areas.

I am just concern that if the new job does not work out and I could be be jobless close to Christmas. The job market will start slow down for Christmas from mid November so it will be even harder to find another job than it is at the moment.
  • it's a risk, but your current job might not work out either - after all you've only been in it a couple of months
