Hello,
Yesterday I earned £10.86 in tips which I thought was pretty good. Its all gone straight in my tip jar for whatever purpose that will eventually serve, whatever purpose. I've been taxed £50 so far at work which is silly because as I'm a student I can earn another 2k or so before I get taxed. However, I think I'll wait a while before I claim it back; that way I won't be tempted to spend it. What do you think?
Today I went to Lidl and bought some meat and some treats; haha. Tim cooks for me mostly so its more snacks for when he isn't in. They sell German style sausages too, which was exciting, cause when we go to Switzerland to see my family, it's one of my favorite things to eat. This evening I will relax in front of the telly and catch up on telly I missed -I have work tomorrow so that's a good/bad thing. I'm also working on Friday, so the money is slowly coming in.
I spoke to Freyja and she said she had some problems with the landlady when it came to bills when she tried to leave: the landlady took the cost of the bills out of her deposit, as well as charging her to keep the deposit secure. I think that's totally wrong, so I hope that doesn't happen to me. I have a months worth of living there to pay for, and I was going to pay for only that. I don't think its fair to take it out of a protected deposit.
Last night when I was walking home from work something really scary happened. I was going to Freyja's and I saw a man opposite the Woodville Pub in Cathays. He came over and asked if I knew the way to a made up place, and I said no, I only knew the way to my friends house. I pointed him in the direction of someone else and said he should ask them, and he turned away and I power walked off, but when I turned around he was following me again. He followed me for a good hour, it didnt matter what side of the road I crossed to, he'd do the same. Then I had to go up a dark alley to get to the halls gate and I thought I'd shaken him off, but he was behind me the whole way and catching me up, so I ducked around a corner and hid behind a car. He walked past, and I crept forward to see if he had left, and he was walking up the alley backwards. I ducked back, and he kept walking then I saw him at the top of the alley on the phone but he saw me and turned back and came jogging down the alley looking really mean. I thought I was going to be killed, or raped, or god knows what, so I stood up and pretended to be talking loudly down the phone to the police and then Freyja turned up and the man got spooked and turned away again. It was terrifying.
I'm sorry I don't have much else to say today.
Use it up; wear it out; make it do or do without!

OMG Thumbelina, that sounds horrendous! I would have been terrified, as I'm sure you were. I wonder why he followed you for so long but didn't do anything sooner, it makes you wonder what is going on in people's heads doesn't it? You really must be very careful in future about walking so far back to your friend's house. I'm all for saving money but I wouldn't want you to come to any harm because of it.
It sounds as though you will be much better off at Tim's house, both financially and otherwise. He sounds like a great friend who is really looking after you. I do hope that you don't have any problems with your former landlady regarding the deposit, though I am aware of similar situations to the one you described. I think there should be proper legal protection on deposits, because some private landlords treat the deposit like their own money, rather than the tenant's and make up all sorts of spurious reasons why they shouldn't give it back. If you have any problems, try the small claims court. I have heard that this can be a very successful way of getting the cash back, as for many tenants there simply isn't any evidence for the landlord to rely on to justify why they are keeping your deposit.
Great news on your extra work shifts and on the NSDs. Have a lovely time with your mum in London and keep up the good work.

God that's awful. Glad you're OK thought I imagine that's scared you a fair bit. Please make yourself safe when doing that walk, do you have a rape alarm? How much would a taxi cost if you booked one in advance?
Hope you're OK

Wow that sounds scary Hope you are ok! Just popping in to say hi, I notice you live in Cardiff (me too!) If you notice someone weird like that hanging around or following you should go into a shop or pub and actually phone the police, or ask for a friend to meet you/walk you home. I lived in Roath/Cathays when I was a student and there were some reports of bad things happening to lone female students at night. Be careful! If you can, keep to the main lit paths rather than taking shortcuts...
Anyway don't worry about what you have to say, this is your diary to record your thoughts and what's going on for you
You need to look at: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/Privaterenting/Tenancies/DG_189120
Then check if your deposit is in one of these schemes. If it's not then you can sue your landlady for three times the amount, because it is now the law that any landlord taking a deposit must put it into one of these schemes. They are there to protect both you and the landlord, and there is one that is free. There are three available, go onto each of their websites and complete the form to ask if your deposit is held with them. They will get back to you within about 5 days.
If it's not, then when she comes to give you back your deposit you can take her to the small claims court. She had to put your deposit in the scheme and provide you with details within 14 days of you moving in.
Your walk home sounds incredibly scary. Next time something like this happens knock on the nearest door with a light on and ask to come in explaining there is a man outside. Then call a cab or a friend to get out of there. Scary stuff! I've got mates in Cardiff, but never heard them say this has happened to them =/
Thanks guys for your advice
I went to the bingo for the first time the other night - Wednesday I think it was. There were 3 of us and we agreed to split our winnings, so I came home with more money than I started. I think I claimed £16.50 by the end of the evening and I really enjoyed it.
I'm going home tonight - well tomorrow morning, but I cannot wait.
My boyfriend landed in Australia last night around midnight - we're yet to talk but I'm glad he's safe.
I've been good at not spending money - although yesterday I did something bad and bought 2 games from Asda. They were preowned and they are two of my favourite ever games, so that was good for me, but bad for my wallet.
At the moment my account stands like this:

I don't think I'm doing too badly -we'll see how I go next week. I'm starting to not be tempted to shop, which is great

Happy Belated Christmas Everyone.
Sorry I haven't written. At the moment my finances are worse than ever, plus I'm house-hunting, so its all very stressful. Hope you are all well. I've not been spending ANY money, because I haven't had any. I did christmas on BNPL, which was a pretty stupid idea, but there's no interest for 12 months, by which time I will have paid off what I owe + I am almost on top of my credit card repayments, except missing one two months ago. I got given some money for my 21st birthday, but I'm still nowhere near to making a dent in my finances. I've offered to cover people in work from the 2nd of January onwards, so fingers crossed someone takes me up on that so that I can stop living off baked beans and pasta with cheese. My loan from Student finance arrives on the 9th and I've written out a budget for 2012 that should leave me with enough money to pay rent, eat, get to and from class, and save a little bit.
So, in conclusion. I'm still -£1600 overdrawn, still have -£500 on my credit card, and owe £400 because of Christmas... That's pretty damn disheartening.
Use it up; wear it out; make it do or do without!
