    Hi

If you are at college you should have a careers centre? Have you talked to them yet. Failing that, what about your old school.
You SHOULD find a centre with people to talk to you, loads of stuff to refere to afterwards, help with applications ... the whole works.
You should also find online personal careers advice programs. These need you to input things about yourself, e.g.

I FIND IT EASY TO TALK TO PEOPLE YES / NO
I AM GOOD WITH MONEY YES / NO
I WORK WELL IN A TEAM YES / No

    And other deeper questions ...

Maybe someone else can suggest specific programs?

Also - talk to friends (who might be very honest of they are good friends), family (Grans and grandpas CAN be better than mum or dad), ex-teachers if you have one you can approach.
Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.
  • Well what can I say.... I am 31 years old and I dont know what to do as a career!!!!! have done many different types of jobs and Im still looking for something else to do!!! my advice would be to think about the things you like doing areas of interest for you and think about the associated jobs. I am interested in Art and am now looking to find a new career related to that in some way.
    on a more practical note
Go to the library the reference area has really good books on different careers and stuff
put in a search in ask/google there are personality test sites (some do free tests) which give you some idea of the career area that might be suited to you.
What colour is my parachute is recommended career book to read

you are young and have plenty of time to try different things out

Work is much nicer when you do something you really like/love so try and move in the direction of areas / tasks that you are interested in!
    good luck!
:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j
  • and im 41- it just doesnt get easier. so get some free careers advice-as james n said- face to face is helpful but there are lots of online tools too. plus books such as what colours your parachute

    dont panic, it'll get sorted

This is starting to sound like a UCA (Unknown Careers Anonymous) meeting - Hi, I'm 26 this year and don't know what I want to do as a career. I got a degree, fell into Admin and have gradually worked my way from office to office ever since.

My only advice is to think about what you like doing, what type of person you want to be and be it. I realised before I left school that I couldn't make money doing the things that I liked to do, so I got a good education and then got a job doing something with variety (office junior) and worked at that for a bit before I realised that I preferred some aspects (typing, admin etc) to others (customer facing, photocopying, filing etc). I also realised that I liked working for people and not having them work for me and that I preferred a public to private sector job - at least this gave me an area to work in.

If you like science, even without a qualification, aim for a science company, if you like people look at sales or retail (if you hate people then avoid them). If you want a lot of extras seek a big company but sometimes if you want a more personal approach you'll get this in a smaller environment. Don't be scared to move a couple of times if you don't suit the first jobs, there is no such thing as a job for life anymore and a lot of people change (but be conscious not to change too much or people will think you can't commit).

Good Luck and hopefully you'll find the dream job, it's out there waiting for you :)

  • hiya, dont worry. im 23 and since school age i wanted to be a teacher, went to uni did the course and decided i dont want to be a teacher anymore! ive since been a school librarian and now im a housewife and my husbands a teacher. i fancy something creative and different, i get so bored doing the same old thing. try different things until you find something you want to do, youll just know when its right. my late 30s friend has hated his job working in a bank for the last 6 or so years, but hasnt changed it. my other friend in his early 30s is known for changing his job every 18months! good luck x

I really wouldn't get too stressed about it. In your early 20s it is perfectly acceptable to try a few things out and move around in jobs. I don't think many people of your age really know what they want to do for the rest of their lives and many more people make career changes throughout their working lives these days.
