Wearing white shoes to someone's wedding

Is it a no-no or can I get away with it? I've already asked my OH if the bride would mind, and he said no, but there's still the chance her family members might not approve.

It's a beach wedding and I'm not a beachy person, so I don't have many summery clothes and sandals. I already own a wedding appropriate dress (which can be dressed up or dressed down accordingly) which is black with a pink bow sash and polka dots. Shoe wise I know I have to wear comfy sandals, but the only pair I own are white patent, cork wedge sandals.

I've already wasted £20 on a pair of pretty, black flip flops which hurt my feet too badly. I then bought another black pair of equally pretty jelly shoes which don't fit properly. I'm loathe to buy another pair, and I really don't have the time to go shopping anyway.

Would it be acceptable for me to wear the white sandals? They're strappy so hopefully the white wouldn't be too obvious. My other problem is I think the white looks a bit weird with the black and pink dress, so I thought I could tie it in better with a white flower clip in my hair. That's more white to worry about though so I was wondering if I'd get away with one of those foam flower clips, the ones that have another colour blended in the middle, so could maybe go for a white and pink one?

You can tell I haven't been to a wedding in a long time and have no idea what is and isn't acceptable these days!

Thanks :)

  • Don't worry, it's perfectly acceptable! I went to a wedding some months ago and some guests (women) were wearing completely white and completely black dresses!! (which I don't really consider very appropriate..). But I don't think the rule applies to shoes, and even less sandals...

Thanks! I'm trying to work with what I have now as it seems a bit daft to spend money on clothes I'll never wear again. Weddings were so much easier when I was younger and my mother dressed me :rotfl:

That's a good point about the black- I'm hoping I won't look too funeral-like as there's a lot of pale pink on my dress too. I'll be buying a cheap pink shawl to keep me warm so that should 'lift' the dress a bit.
  • Hi! I got married in May and to tell the truth, I wouldn't have a clue colour shoes what half the guests wore. Several people also had black dresses, but with splashes of colour, so that's also fine!

  • Thanks clearing_out_my_pockets! I figured that too, the bride will certainly be enjoying herself too much to care what I have on my feet!

Glad to hear the dress should be fine too- I'll make sure I have lots of pinky assessories!

I honestly don't think anyone would care what colour your shoes were - goodness in the 80s we all used to wear white stilettos for everything, didn't we :rotfl:.

Really, no-one will mind - it wouldn't even occur to me that anyone would find anything to comment about with a guest wearing white footwear to a wedding.
  • I'm a bit of a stickler for manners and ettiquette, and I think wearing all white or all black clothes to a wedding is a complete no no. But shoes? Wouldn't care. As long as they match, are comfortable and you like them, work away :)

Thanks girls! I know, when I asked my OH if it would be acceptable he looked at me like I'd gone mad. I'd got myself a bit worked up after reading some the opinions of bridezillas online
  • you could always customise the sandals by adding a pink bow and polka dot ribbon to go with your dress- lovely outfit:)

That's a fab idea! Thanks so much, they'll go much better with the rest of my outfit :D I might try and customise my bag as well as it's plain black.

The only think I got annoyed about at my wedding was the fact that despite me stating I did not want any bridesmaids by step-daughter was sent to our wedding in a WHITE BRIDESMAID DRESS.

A lot of guests thought she was my bridesmaid and I was furious (after the event as on the day I was too busy enjoying getting married to my Hubby).

I most definately do not remember what shoes people were wearing and even if I had I would not have a second thought about anyone wearing white sandals. You'll be fine x
