Might sound like a silly question, but i am currently an employee, and i am thinking of doing some extra work but i believe it is self employed work, can you be both?????? or will my current employed job have to become self employed????

Many people do both, including me at one point. You continue to pay tax and NI under PAYE for your main job, and complete a self assessment for the freelance part time earnings.
You do need to think about many issues though. What does your contract of employment say about other work. Would there be a conflict of interest? Would you get too tired to do your main job properly?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

You will need to register with HMRC so that they send you a self assessment form and deal with the Class 2 NI contributions which you will either need to pay or claim exemption from if your self employed income will be sub £5,0000
