Working From Home

Hello everyone,

Due to a horrible migraine/thyroid/depression condition, I've had to accept I can no longer do 9-5 at the moment and have had to pack my dream job in. :-(

I'm trying my best to get myself mended, but at the moment I'm quite incapacitated and whilst I can't work 9-5, I certainly don't want to sit in my own misery on the sofa all day.

Could anybody point me in the direction of a non-scammy type directory of work-from-home opportunities? I've been teaching some English through Skype, which has brought a bit of cash in, but the last thing I want to become is a financial burden on my family.

Sorry, it's a bit of a random question!

Hope you're all having a good weekend.

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

Your not a financial burden. You can earn a lot by just teaching English. But you should apply from sites like Odesk, Elance etc. Since some pay higher.
  • Thanks very much for the pointers, Style26!

    Don't discount "ordinary" jobs.

I used to have a job where several people came into the office (on average) a morning a month, and worked from home the rest of the time. We would never have advertised the job as "home working", because it wasn't - it was just that all that was needed was an internet connection, so it didn't really matter whether we were in the office or not.

Generally you start from "what are my skills, and what do I want to do?", and then make realistic adjustments to what you want based on what you can afford. I think that's just as true for you as for everybody else, though I do see that life has dealt you an extremely tough hand in trying to work out how you'll get paid for what you want to do.

Can you do anything that's related to the field your dream job is in?

I have gotten some work through elance.com. You are competing in a global marketplace so try to stay with the jobs where English is important. Technical fields such as computers, IT, graphic design etc where English is not that important, expect to get very very little pay ($5 to $10) as you will be competing against The Indian sub-continent etc.

There are quite a few students wanting people to do their assignments for them, so if you are not into helping people to cheat, then look for those. Some are quite blatant about it, others are not.

Odesk I hear is just as good as elance. Also Peopleperhour is worth a look at, but I think it is quite different from Odesk and Elance.

Thanks for the pointers, Annisele. My job was in Germany in the marketing field and I had that rather cruelly taken from me by bad health, but that's life.

I'm looking now for some freelance work online from the links a few people posted and I hope to be able to get some work from that whilst I recover.

Thanks - I'm just creating my profile on oDesk as I type! It looks quite promising and with a bit of patience I should be able to get some work from there.

  • Some call centres also have homeworkers; you have to be able to provide a suitable working area and they'll install a phone line, router, IP telephone and terminal to allow you to connect to the office.
  • Could you company not have been somewhat helpful? reduce hours for a time?
