Best sites for job seekers?

Hi,

I graduated from university on 19th August with a First Class Honours in Accountancy and Finance and have been looking for work for about a month with no offers at all.

I have applied for over 600 vacancies and have not received a single job offer. Perhaps a 30 year old graduate is not an employers conventional choice. Most responses are that although I have achieved a good result I have no experience, my experience is based more on manual work.

Anyway my apologies for digressing, my query is that with so many helpful members on the board I am sure somebody must have compiled a list of reputable sites which are worth registering to regarding employment. I have registered with local papers, reed, fish4jobs, career builder, total jobs to name just a few. As I have been applying on these for a month now I wondered if there are any good sites that I might be missing out on. I have also registered my details with all the accountancy agencies which each inform me that I don't have enough experience. Unfortunately as the market is so competitive at the moment, even Junior Assistant Accountants need to have worked in a similar role before.

If it is of any relevance, I am looking for work around the Wolverhampton area and will travel up to 20 miles which includes Birmingham.

I would appreciate any input as to where I could register my CV next.

Many thanks

There was a thread with links to various sites, trying to find it but cant, what is it you want to do. Is it accountancy you want to do ?

    How about here
  • Have you tried specific accountancy/financial services based agencies? this is what I'd consider more niche than your generic admin jobs, for example. Worth a try.
  • I find reed is not worth bothering with, I applied for many on there but didn't hear anything. I prefer fish4jobs as I did actually hear back from some of those (it's linked with the Birmingham Mail, which has a lot of vacancies listed).

You could look into volunteering doing some sort of accounts-related work to try and get some experience. You could try looking on do-it.org.uk or just try contacting local charities to see if they have any vacancies.

You could also look at vacancies at universities, most of them do their own recruitment so you'd need to look on their websites. However, you may still have the no experience problem there, but it's another thing to look into at least. I've just signed up with unitemps, which deal with Warwick University & BCU so you could look at that, although I've literally just registered tonight so can't really say whether it's good or not yet!

I live in Brum so wish I could be more helpful, but I'm not really looking for work in accounting or finance so my knowledge is a bit limited!
  • Not sure what you have done so far but:

Have a look at the large firms - a 1st will be acceptable for them! (but you need good a levels too)

Some of the smaller firms around the Birmingham area will also be recruiting i.e. Dains - but the position won't be until september now

You should probably decide if you want to work in practice or industry and then focus on that

In terms of agencies - they have good points and bad points but you really need to go into them and register - phone up and book an appointment

Some of the large national ones for accounting:
    Reed
    Hays
    Page Personnel/Michael Page
    Robert Half

I think RaynorWest/TonerGraham are more local agencies to west midlands so try them aswell
  • First of all, my stock answer to all out of work graduates, if you are not working/studying at the moment please go and get a voluntary job somewhere to plug the gap. It doesn't have to be a big one - a day/afternoon a week doing something worthy will more than do. You may even find that a local charity needs some accountancy work done for free so it's even relevant to your career.

Other than that, make sure that you get your CV looked at by people with experience of actually recruiting (not careers advisors).

Good luck and keep your pecker up!
