Urgent Help Required

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any experience of the Credit Checks employment agencies or employers conduct as part of their pre-screening process. Unfortunately my husband has been un-employed on and off for a couple of years which has led us to get ourselves in trouble financially. As S**s law dictates two things have happened this week - one is that one of the credit card companies has sent us a letter stating that unless we repay in full they will take us to court and start CCJ proceedings against us - the second is that tonight my Husband has a job interview which his agency feels 99% confident he will get - which would go a long way in sorting out our problems. In terms of the horrible letter - we have spoken to the cc company and they have agreed to hold off until after the interview and if he gets it we can agree a repayment plan. Problem is I have just spoken to the agency and they have said they are so confident my husband is going to get the job that they are starting all the necessary checks, reference, credit checks etc. This has now filled me with blind panic as the fact that we are behind with payments and have a default against us might jeopardise his chances. We appear to be in a lose-lose situation. I know it's a shot in the dark but does anyone have any experience of this or can you offer me any advice. Can the company refuse him on the grounds of this? Although it is an investment bank the job he will be performing is back-office not directly involved in finance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

What job is he applying for?

CCJ's have been known to affect job offers, but it is unlikely.
  • Hi thanks for replying - he is a graphic designer/project manager, he is on the interview at the moment - I am sitting here with everything crossed. It hasn't gone as far as a ccj so that shouldn't show on the credit check. It's just a bit unsettling everyone knowing your business (ie the agency and employer). The situation we are in is not something we are proud of and we are even considering selling our house to avoid having this hanging around our neck for evermore. We just want him to get a job and have a second chance with a clean slate the last couple of years has just been a constant stream of worry and living on the edge. I just hope this is the start of a brighter future .

I doubt they would do a credit check, maybe a police referance check for criminal convictions, but probably not a credit check, what difference would that make to a graphic designer job ?
  • I've just logged on this morning and want to thank you all for your support. Family and friends don't know quite how bad our situation is so it is such a relief to know there is someone *out there* to talk to.

Hubby did the 2.5 hour interview and test last night which went really well. Unfortunately they definately carry out credit checks, but I'm unsure at exactly what depth they go into - perhaps it's just a mini-check to check for ccjs or bankruptcy. Anyway we should know if he's passed the interview stage this morning as they are looking for someone to start next Tuesday. I'll keep you posted and thanks again for the support

    Hi There
I can't see why there would be a problem with the credit file regarding this job. One thing to consider, credit checks show things like fraud, so this could be a reason as to why they would do a credit check. The most the credit file will have on it when checked will be a default notice, and that is not the end of the world. They are probably looking for something more serious than a default notice, and of course, they wont find anything, so I'm sure it wont jepodise the chances your husband has of getting this job.

    Good luck!

Hope it goes well for you as well. Ive worked in the cash centre in RBOS Edinburgh before, where quite literally there is millions and millions of pounds in notes everywhere!! I had a credit check done before I started, and had a default for a year then, and loads of missed payments. My file was a complete mess, and I had RBOS products on there too. I still got the job, and I hope Im not tempting fate here, but he should be fine. If I wanted to, I could have pocketed loads of cash, so I dont think they would risk that happening. Of course, I wouldnt have got very far, but the point Im making is, they let me work with all this money given my bad record and obviously didnt see my as a risk. I didnt stay long cos seeing all that money made me realise how much the banks have, and how little I have! :(
