Anyone used pure henna on their hair? Can you advise me pls!?

I've just bought a big packet of pure Mehendi henna from my local Indian supermarket to dye my hair with. My hair is a mousey brown and I want a burgundy colour. I know I have to add lemon and other stuff to the henna to make it darker, either indigo or something else. Are there any henna experts out there? How do you find the right colour mix for your hair and what do you add to your henna?

  • Well, I wouldn't call myself a henna expert, but I have used pure (body art quality, or BAQ) henna on my mid-brown hair. I mixed it with indigo, usually about 75% henna and 25% indigo, to get a nice dark chestnut.

I found this page a useful resource: http://www.hennaforhair.com/
Have a good look around - there's pages and pages of useful stuff, and that's before you even touch the forum!

Hope this helps, and good luck. Your hair will love you for using pure henna!
  • I used to use the henna from Lush. I really liked it, however, after using henna on your hair, avoid peroxide at all costs. I made the fatal mistake of trying to bleach my hair a good time after I started using henna & it turned out to be a complete disaster.

I think once you start using henna on your hair, you've pretty much commited yourself to henna. After saying that, it maybe ok to use a regular hair dye, just not good if you decide to bleach your hair at a later time.
