ESA claimants next Monday - Heads Up !

  • The simple facts are that the two groups are completely artificial, someone can qualify for the Support Group and be ready to return to work in six months and someone can score 100+ points in the WCA (15 required), with a degenerative and incurable illness such as MS,. and still fail to qualify for the SG and have no hope of every working again.

I agree - I find the fact that those in the Support Group can undertake permitted work a complete contradiction!
  • Any condition could score 15 points, it is more a case of how the condition affects the individuals ability to work.

How do they correctly and accurately know how a person' mental health condition affects their ability to work?

I am disabled and have read these descriptors. I would score way more than 15 points. According to the ESA scores I should be technically unfit for work.

This is so laughable because I actually work.

That is the million dollar question! The DM *should* have evidence from several sources - the ESA50, medical reports from the GP and consultants, and if required, evidence from an ATOS medical. However, the theory assumes that all the evidence is completed fully, and the medics and claimant actually know what is required in the forms. Clearly in reality this is not always the case. Further, the DM should give equal weighting to all the evidence, but again this is often not the case.

I don't think it is a difficult system to get right - but at present, they are way off the mark!

There are 15 descriptors that each earn 15 points that's 225 points available from only 15 of the total descriptors.

  • So which mental health conditions score 15 points?

Only two as far as I'm aware :

    - Coping with social engagement due to cognitive impairment or mental disorder.

    and

    - Appropriateness of behaviour with other people, due to cognitive impairment or mental disorder.

Isn't it worked out on the last 2 tax years? So if that's based on IB i don't think you would? I'm probably wrong :o

You'll be transferred to Contribution Based ESA with the possibility of an Income Related ESA top up
  • You'll be transferred to Contribution Based ESA with the possibility of an Income Related ESA top up
