Childrens off from school

Hi,

This is not the correct place to post this but cannot find anywhere else to post it.

I would like to take my 2 childrens for a holiday to their home country fo 4-5 weeks but school will only give 10 days unauthorised. Not more than that otherwise childrens willl be dismissed and education dept will be notified. I cannot take the childrens during summer holiday as its very warm during that time in that country, I and the kids are not use to that weather.

If I still take the kids - will their be any proceedings against the parents?

Thanks
MS

If the school won't agree and you take them anyway you could, in theory, be fined although headteachers seem reluctant to do this normally. If summer is too hot why not use Easter and a week either side of it?

The school is within their rights to take your children off their roll if you take them out of school for 4 or 5 weeks during term time. If they are telling you this is what they will do, I think you have your answer? How will you deal with getting them back into school when you return from your trip? Their old school won't be holding places for them, so you may find yourself trying to find new places for them at different schools.
  • How old are the children, how is their attendance generally, are they keeping up witht heir school work?

Where is the home country? When are you planning on going? Is there a religious reason for visiting the country?

The school are giving 10 days unauthorised, are they going to give any days as authorised parental holiday?

I know all schools are different but depending on the answers to these questions the time granted could be different.

    government guidance here

The 10 days unauthorised means that the school know the children will be out of school but don't agree, so the coding on the register will be different from an authorised (or agreed) holiday.

It doesn't mean they will give additional, authorised days. The 10 days is the maximum.

Take them over Easter when they get two weeks off and take 10 days max absence to get your 4 weeks total.
Or is it that it is cheaper in term time.....?

school is not compulsory - making sure your children receive education is compulsory....

so if the OP really wanted to they could withdraw the kids from state educations saying they want to Home educate go abroad for months and months (educating them as they go ) and then home educate them when they return to this country .....

  • 4-5 weeks is a long time to miss school.

Consider the teacher's predicament. They will have to spend time upon your return to help your children catch up. That is time they will not be spending teaching the other children who have been there.

Would you make any arrangements to take work with you to help your children keep up?

I understand your desire to take them to your home country for a visit but, as others have suggested, you could minimise the time they will lose in the classroom by combining half term or Christmas/Easter holidays with some time out of school to make up the 4-5 weeks.

You have to accept that if you take them away for 4-5 weeks they may not have a school to come back to. The school cannot stop you, but you cannot stop the school from withdrawing your childrens places.

Is the school your children now attend a popular school? They have the right to withdraw your children's places so that others wanting a place there can have them.

When you get back, and have no places at that school where is your next school? Is it better/worse than the one they are already in?
